FRIDAY FIVE: 5 ETSY FINDS FOR A HOME SPA SESSION

As the nights are starting to get darker and we move that little bit closer towards full-on Winter is Coming territory, I’ve got back into the habit of evening baths before bed. This week I’ve hunted around Etsy for a few treats for some at home evening pampering sessions; just add a good book and a glass of wine…

Etsy At Home Spa Pamper Session Picks

  1. Kimono Dressing Gown by VerryKerry, £109 here
If I’m going to pamper myself, I want something beautiful to put on afterwards. Made from pure cotton, this kimono is a stunner and there are more designs available. This is going to be making it’s way onto my Wish List.
  2. Wooden Bath Caddy by  BousUK, £40 here
How are you going to balance your wine and book without a bath caddy people? You need one in your life. I love mixing in natural wood finishes in a bathroom to keep things from feeling too stark, this bath caddy is made from reclaimed pallets and has such rustic charm. Also, it’s made in my home town so it gets an extra thumbs up for that!
  3. Eucalyptus, Lemon & Cedarwood Candle by WildheartOrganics, £8.95 here
Every good pamper session needs a candle and I’m definitely going to order myself one of these. I love this combination of scents, but there are others to choose from on their Etsy site if this doesn’t float your boat. The apothecary style jar adds a little something to this vegan soy candle that has 40 hours clean burn time.
  4. Scented Lavender Neck Cushion by FingerPrickingGood, £15 here
As someone who loses track of time and finds herself spending hours in the bath, I’m always attempting to make myself more comfy by shoving towels under my head whilst having a soak. Filled with Yorkshire lavender to aid relaxation this is another item jumping onto my Etsy shopping list.
  5. Organic Soothing Muscle Rub by WhiskeyRunCo, £10.65 here
My only non UK based pick, this organic, vegan muscle rub just sounds so tempting to help get rid of the days aches and pains. They have great reviews on Etsy and have a range of balms / skincare items on their Etsy page.

LAZY GIRL COOKING: 6 CAN TACO SOUP

Like cooking but lazy? This series is going to have the recipes for you!

I actually really, really enjoy cooking. Proper cooking. When I have the time. And therein lies the problem. A lack of time. After a long day, the last thing I want to do is spend ages cooking. Recipes like this one are what I need after a long day. Ones where you need to do nothing more time consuming than shove some things together and bung it in the oven or a pan. At a pinch I’ll accept some gentle chopping being added into the mix…

I have to admit that I’m not really sure I can call this a “recipe”. It’s literally, as the name suggests, a list of canned items that get opened along with a couple of other things, chucked in a pan and left to simmer away. Pinterest has a few different versions of this soup kicking about but this is my favourite way of making it. Served with some crusty bread or a toasted pitta, it’s delicious! 6 Can Taco Soup IngredientsIngredients:

  • 1 can black eyed beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can sweetcorn, drained
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 can of cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can / jar of enchilada sauce
  • 1 packet of chicken breast (approx 200-300g)
  • 1 packet of chicken broth
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
Directions:
  1. Open cans
  2. Chuck all ingredients together in a large pan (rip your chicken into bite sized chunks as you throw it in).
  3. Heat until warm, stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve. Crusty bread, a warmed pitta bread or tortilla chips are all great with this. If I’m feeling all fancy I might throw some grated cheese on top before serving.

I know, I know… Super complicated. Hang in there though. You might just be able to see this recipe through to completion… 😉

Taco soup

This may not look the most amazing for presentation, particularly if you have skillz like mine and go for the “throw it in a bowl” option everytime, but it’s quick, easy and tastes amazing, plus it has just enough of a kick to make it much more interesting than your standard soup.

BEAUTY REVIEW: BEAUTY BLENDER

I’ve never really bought into the idea of using make-up sponges. I’d had those packs of generic triangle / wedge sponges in the past and found that they either just dragged make up around my face resulting in a less than flawless finish or, as someone who prefers a fuller coverage base, seemed to cause more foundation to end up on the sponge rather than on my face.

beauty blender

After reading reviews of the original Beauty Blender and seeing it reach Holy Grail status for so many people I really wanted to try it out but was reluctant to fork out £16 for a make-up sponge. Last year was delighted when I received a Beauty Blender in a monthly subscription box (possibly Birchbox? I really can’t remember.) and the hype really is true in this case.

To use, you run the sponge under water until it expands to roughly double in size then firmly squeeze to get rid of excess water. I then put the sponge in a towel and squeeze once again to soak up any remaining water. You should end up with a sponge which is slightly damp but not dripping wet. It sounds bizarre but… it just works.

I use my Beauty Blender daily to apply under eye concealer and, when I’m wanting a flawless finish, to apply foundation rather than my usual approach of blending it in with my fingers. The Beauty Blender’s egg shape makes it ideal for using under the eye and for blending around the nose as well.

When applying foundation I find that using a bouncing/dabbing action with the sponge over the face and building up coverage leads to a finish that definitely has a somewhat airbrushed quality to it. It’s also excellent for helping to blend in cream contour to avoid any harsh lines. Overall applying my foundation using a Beauty Blender gives me the full coverage I want yet the overall appearance of my foundation definitely seems ‘lighter’ and more radiant.

To clean the sponge, you can use brush cleanser, shampoo or the solid round of soap that comes with the sponge. I’ve also used plain old handwash and that works just fine too. If you don’t clean the Beauty Blender soon after applying make up it will end up with staining that doesn’t look the most appealing so it’s not something to keep out on display! Other than that the only downsize is that if you have long nails, over time you will probably end up with nail indentations in the sponge. Mine has loads but it doesn’t have an effect on how it applies make-up.

I really don’t know what wizardry was involved when the Beauty Blender was made but it just works better than any other make-up sponge I’ve ever come across. It feels soft, malleable and much less dense than your standard make-up sponge. All in all, it’s been a game changer for me when it comes to make-up application and I wouldn’t be without one in my make-up bag. It may be on the pricey size but it really is worth it. I’ve used mine for a year and I’m only just getting to the point of thinking I should get a replacement so I think it’s actually pretty good value for money considering the results you get using it.

You can buy the original Beauty Blender via Cult Beauty for £16 here, along with the rest of the Beauty Blender range.

FRIDAY FIVE: 5 THINGS UNDER £10 TO BUY FROM IKEA

Ah, IKEA. How I love thee. I know it seems to be the done thing to hate on IKEA but it’s such a guilty pleasure of mine.

A lot of people seem to think Ikea is just filled with quick fix, mass produced crap but I genuinely think a lot of their products are really great value.

These are my top 5 picks you should definitely grab on your next visit and all are under £10.

Ikea Bargain Buys

  1. KNAGGLIG boxes £9 / £5 here
I love these boxes and have been grabbing a couple every time I go to IKEA. They’re perfect for almost anything from using in a pantry to cute storage for toiletries / hair tools. They’re solid wood, super sturdy and can be jazzed up by painting or staining them.
  2. DEKAD alarm clock £4.50 here
Super cute, this looks adorable on your bedside table.
  3. SINNLIG candles £2.50 / £0.85 here
These candles come in two sizes and a few scents but my personal preference is the small vanilla ones. They’re long lasting, smell really good and for 85p you can keep buying these while you save up for that Jo Malone or Diptyque candle you’ve had your eye on…
  4. TEKLA tea towel £0.35 here
I mean, they’re 35p. What’s not to love?! If the price hasn’t already convinced you these tea towels are absorbent, don’t leave any pesky bits of lint on your glasses and wash well. The classic simple design is an added bonus.
  5. FANTASTISK paper towels £1.25 / 100pack here
These napkins may be cheap but they’re brilliant quality; suitably thick and absorbant, they’re great for parties and I always pick up a pack whenever I’m at IKEA.
