SPRING BEDROOM REFRESH: CONTEMPORARY DUVET COVERS

Sunday was the first official day of spring and I can’t be the only one that’s thoroughly over-excited for its arrival. I always seem to get so much more accomplished once spring arrives; lighter evenings make me far more motivated to complete tasks on an evening and I always seem to wake up earlier and more refreshed than I do in winter – getting up on a morning just feels easier when it’s light out and, hopefully, the sun is shining.

With that in mind, I love the idea of giving your bedroom a spring refresh at this time of year; bringing my bedroom out of winter hibernation mode and putting away the heavy blankets in favour of light and bright bedding that puts me in all round sunnier mood. I honestly feel like my sleep quality is so much better when the environment around me is a pleasant one – just think how lovely it is to get into bed when you’ve put on clean bedding! Sleep is so important for your health, both physical AND mental, and I truly do believe in the benefits of getting enough beauty sleep so I think making sure your sleep space is somewhere that makes you feel relaxed and at ease is really important.

Picking out a new duvet cover is a great, cost effective way to make a huge impact in the overall look and feel of your bedroom. Plus the longer days and warmer temperatures make spring the best time to get a little bit adventurous and play with new colours.

Personally, I love to inject some brighter colours and florals at this time of year, whilst keeping a fresh, modern take on things. Here are my favourite picks of contemporary duvet covers to give a little inspiration for updating and refreshing your bedroom this spring…

Contemporary Duvet Covers for a Spring Bedroom Refresh

THE BRIGHTS
1. The contemporary duvet covers from Yorkshire Linen are amazing and the tropical duvet cover set is one of my favourites. I’m kind of obsessed by it – I’d feel like I was sleeping in a rainforest! If you had a neutral bedroom this would be amazing to inject some bright and bold colours into your room for the warmer months ahead.

2. This bright floral duvet cover, also from Yorkshire Linen, packs a serious punch of colour whilst still keeping things light thanks to the expanse of white background. The pops of fuchsia pink are just gorgeous and would be a definite ‘pick me up’ after a long day.

THE PATTERNS
3. This grey and yellow reversible duvet cover set from Habitat just screams springtime to me. I love the bright yellow paired with white and grey to give a modern, clean look.

4. Bright colours really appeal to me once the weather picks up and this Dickins and Jones spotty duvet cover from House of Fraser would definitely make a statement. This simple pattern still makes an impact thanks to the bold red colour. If you’re not a fan of florals, a pattern like this is one to consider.

THE FLORALS
5. Both of these are fantastic options for spring  – the floral patterns lean a little more towards the traditional but the grey and soft pink colours of the Canterbury duvet cover keep this feeling contemporary, plus the grey and white polka dots are utterly adorable.

6. Likewise the Romanie duvet cover set, with it’s white background, still feels clean and fresh and the mint green striped reverse makes this one hard to resist.

THE FRESH
7. For an updated take on the classic “nautical stripe” bedding I really like this Hadley striped bedding set from M&S. The mint green hues of the stripes would definitely make this one that gives your bedroom a light and bright feeling.

8. Finally, this crisp white duvet cover from Yorkshire Linen looks divine, like something from an amazing hotel room, and would be beautiful in any room regardless of your existing colour scheme. I love the idea of having a bolder flat or fitted sheet underneath the duvet (perhaps a bold floral like this one from M&S or these fantastic spotty sheets from West Elm) as your own little secret surprise when you hop into bed. There’s just something about having that little bit of something special tucked away that really appeals to me.

Any one of these duvet covers, plus a bunch of fresh flowers on my bedside table, would definitely set me up for some serious springtime slumber but 1, 6 and 8 might just edge in as my personal favourites.

Which would be your pick of the bunch? What do you do to get your bedroom ready for spring?

#BRUSSELS

Brussels

I wrote this post back in November and it’s sadly still so relevant today. I wish we could live in a world that was a little kinder, more tolerant, less filled with hate.

I feel truly fortunate today that my friends who live and work in the city are all safe and my heart goes out to the people of Brussels. We stand with you. Hate can’t win. We will prevail.

SPRING CLEAN YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

Spring clean your beauty routine

I spent the weekend attempting to do some serious de-cluttering, cleaning and DIY. As I procrastinated by playing with make-up worked on clearing out my make-up stash I got to thinking that this really is the perfect time of year not just to have a clear out of your make up and beauty products drawers but also to give your beauty routine a spring clean.

Brighten up: Let’s start adding some brighter colours to our beauty routine. Whether it’s a bolder blush, brighter lips or some high impact nail colour – spring, and the promise of some better weather (or at least a holiday to escape the drizzle of England), is a great time to dig out those shades that have been languishing at the bottom of our collection over winter. I’m tempted by the new Lancome Juicy Shakers and I adore Gelish nail polish in Tiger Blossom once I have a bit of a tan.

Get the glow: Warmer weather makes a face full of heavy make-up no fun so this is when I start to look for lighter, dewier options (I’ll refrain from making any recommendations here because I think that my version of “dewy” really isn’t the same as most people’s. I’ll never fully stray away from a pretty matte make-up look because my combination skin often manages to introduce enough of an oily “glow” without any help!). I also aim to avoid using powder products where possible in the warmer months and try to opt for cream product options for contouring, bronzer, blush and highlighter. The NYX Wonder Stick is great for contouring as I mentioned here and I raved about the Sleek Barekissed Illuminators in this post.

Wake up and smell the roses: …Or whatever your spring / summer scents of choice are. Now is the time to put away your heavier scents and pick up something lighter. I love Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia for spring and Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess is an eternal go-to option for summer.

Stay protected: Now hopefully we all know the importance of SPF and are incorporating into our existing beauty routines already but once the weather starts to pick up it reminds me to consider the areas that often get overlooked but are exposed to sunlight just as much as our faces, like my hands, chest and if I’m wearing my hair up the tops of my ears and hair parting. Despite the fact that I know up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds, so it’s not just blazing hot sunshine that can damage you’re skin, I’m definitely guilty of neglecting SPF in winter months. #BadAmy.

Silky smooth: I can get a little bit lazy with keeping on top of hair removal in the winter knowing I’m buried under a tonne of layers, so the arrival of spring is always a reminder that Yeti really isn’t an attractive look on me! Sorry for the TMI aspect of that sentence by the way…
(And YES disclaimer time, obviously no woman should feel obliged to remove body hair because of societal pressures so, if you like yours and don’t want to remove it, then absolutely don’t – no judgement here! But personally I do want to.)
To keep any pesky ingrown hairs at bay I love the Bliss Ingrown Eliminating Pads and the TendSkin Roll On for Ingrown Hair.

Soft and gentle: Again, the promise of warmer weather reminds me that I’ll soon be baring a bit more flesh than I have been over the past few months and to take a little more time in the shower to exfoliate my skin and not to skimp on moisturising post-shower. I also like to make sure my feet are looking their best, as I mentioned in my February favourites post. I swear by the Soap & Glory Heel Genius and the Scholl Velvet Smooth Diamond Pedi Electric Hard Skin Remover to keep my feet in tip top condition.

Say goodbye to Casper the Friendly Ghost: I am currently the palest it is possible for a human to be before you start to look blue (possible mild exaggeration there but…). I like to start adding a gradual tanning moisturiser into my beauty routine at this time of year – having a hint of a tan just makes me feel so much better and definitely helps put winter behind me.

Not-A-Sweaty-Betty: As anyone who has ever had to endure the tube in rush hour during summer months can testify, warmer weather = sweating.So.Much.Sweating.
My weapons deodorants of choice to battle summer sweat are solid stick deodorants. Both Mitchum’s Ultimate 48Hr Protection and Dove’s Maximum Protection anti-perspirant deodorants are amazing and on an average day (i.e – not exercising) are pretty much guaranteed to make sure that I’m not sweating, regardless of the horrors of crowded public transport! I’m particularly fond of Dove’s Green Tea and Cucumber one because it smells incredible.
