FRIDAY FIVE: 5 LIP BALMS

This weeks Friday Five seems me delving into my stash of lip balms for a quick mini-review.

lip balms

  1. Maybelline Baby Lips in Intense Care, £2.99 here.
This is neither a love nor hate for me. I know a lot of people hate the packaging and yes, it’s not remotely sophisticated, but it’s kind of cute and I don’t mind it. For a stick lip balm it glides onto the lips, it doesn’t tug or pull like so many can do, lasts for a couple of hours and smells lovely. I don’t think I would personally use it again as there are other lip balms in a tube I prefer but it’s cheap and if you’re just wanting to hydrate your lips on the go it’s worth giving it a try.
  2. Vaseline Lip Therapy, £1.95 here.
The original. You all know this one. These little pots can be messy as hell and I don’t use this on my lips any more but as a multi use product, it’s great. I use it on my heels and cuticles to combat dryness / cracked skin. I’ve heard it can also work wonders on eyelashes to make them thicker and longer although I’m not sure I’m willing to start slathering this on my eyes to test the theory!
  3. Korres Lip Butter in Guava, £8 here.
I could just sit and smell this all day. It’s delicious! Made with shea butter and rice wax the texture is buttery and not at all sticky, making this one of the few pot lip balms I’ll actually reach for. Apparently these also come in a stick form so I’d like to give those a try and see how they compare. It’s perfect for keeping my lips soft and definitely a favourite.
  4. Figs & Rouge Balm in Cherry & Vanilla, £4.95 here.
100% organic and petroleum free, this balm can be used anywhere on the body, although personally I’ve only ever given it a try on the lips. I have both the Cherry and Vanilla and Rambling Rose balms and both feels moisturising, gives lips a nice sheen and I loved the scent (particularly the cherry and vanilla…) but the texture did seem a little gritty on first application. If you warm the product up with your fingertips you do get a soft even texture but I don’t think I’d repurchase, mainly because I’ve realised that I just hate applying lip balms with my fingers when I’m out (sticky fingers = no bueno) so I’m more likely to stick with those in tubes from now on. Whilst writing this post, I’ve discovered that they do balms in a tube so I might give one of those a try in the future.
  5. Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Honey Nectar, £8 here.
It’s in a tube so it’s easy to apply on the go, it’s long lasting and it’s tinted. #winning. The shade Honey Nectar is called a “true nude” on the Pixi website and they’re right. If it was a lipstick I’d be calling this a “my lips but better” shade. It’s sheer and neutral but adds a little something to your lips when you’re out and about. Pixi’s lip balm has shea butter to nourish lips and Vitamin E to protect and is definitely my pick of the bunch.

FRIDAY FIVE: 5 WISH LIST ITEMS FROM OHWHATSTHIS

When Oh What’s This launched their new online shop I was super excited to have a look around. They handpick items from independent retailers and designers for you to shop in one place. Here are five of the things making their way onto my Wish List… OhWhatsThat Wish List

  1. Concrete & copper candlestick holders by S O R T London, £19 here
I need these. I do, I do, I do. I love the mix of industrial concrete and shiny copper (pretty sure I was a magpie in a former life…). Each candle holder is handmade and would look fantastic on my wooden dining table.
  2. Copper dipped planters by S O R T London, £12 here
These are so cute that they might even manage to make me keep a plant alive for longer than a week. The pots are made from hand mixed porcelain cement in black, grey and white and the only problem is deciding which one to go for!
  3. Pom pom cushion, £25 here
It has pom poms. POM POMS! Do I need to add anymore? This cushion also comes in a larger, square size and has lots of different colour options for the pom poms. I’m resisting the temptation to order a hot pink one immediately…
  4. Roses Are Pink fine art print by Lola Donoghue, from £80 here
I adore Lola Donoghue’s work and already own two of her prints. They’re definitely statement pieces in a room, especially if you go with one of the bigger sizes.
  5. Eames style chair by Shabby Stores, £44.99 here
This is a great replica of the classic Eames chair. I know replicas can be controversial but this is an affordable way to get the look for those of us who can’t quite afford the real deal. I’m thinking of getting one of these for either my desk or for the dressing room.

WHAT I ATE WEDNESDAY #1

#WIAW 1

  • Breakfast
I used to be terrible about skipping breakfast but I’m trying to get into the habit of having something in the morning. This morning I had two crumpets with Flora Light and a glass of water.
  • Mid-morning snack
I try to always have fruit and/or yoghurt mid-morning. If I’m at home I’m more likely to have some berries with yoghurt but if I’m out and about then I’ll just take a couple of pieces of fruit with me. Today I had a banana and a satsuma.#WIAW 2
  • Lunch
Lunch varies massively for me depending on what I’m doing / where I am. Today I had a pretty substantial lunch of a jacket potatoe (with Flora Light), two slices of ham and some lettuce and cucumber salad with water to drink. I also had a Petit Filous yoghurt – yes, I know they’re for kids but I love them.#WIAW 3
  • Mid-afternoon snack
Or as I like to call it The Snack That Should Not Have Happened. It’s not my fault, I’m weak and someone brought treats in! Cornflake Crispy with Smarties. So delicious, I can’t even feel guilty about it.
  • Dinner
Prawn stir fry. King prawns, baby sweetcorn, mange tout, rice noodles and sweet chilli sauce. Pretty healthy, but not pictured are the two glasses of wine I had with it!

IKEA HAUL

Another weekend, another adventure in IKEA. As always I went for one thing and left with a bag full of goodies… IKEA HaulTop row:
RIBBA 40x50cm frame in oak effect, £7. Coming soon to a laundry room near you me.
PLUGGIS waste bin, £10. I’m going to use this to store all my lunchbox / tupperware type items in the hope I’ll no longer risk getting concussed every time I open that cupboard.
TILLSLUTA dry food containers, £5. For storing dry food. Obvs.

Middle row:
POKAL glasses, £0.50. Love these. Chunky and seem to have a certain ‘bounce-ability’ when you drop them on the floor…
FAGLEBODA handles in brass, £6. Actually bought two packs of these for an IKEA hack I’m planning on doing. Eventually…
FANTASTISK paper napkins, £1.25 & £0.70. Regular napkins and cocktail napkins. Because I’m messy.
DINERA bowls in grey-blue, £2 and £1.30. I bought two of each of these and, not gonna lie, it’s pretty much just because they’ll look pretty on the open shelving in my kitchen.

Bottom row:
OREHAMN bath caddy, £3. After Friday’s post about at-home pamper sessions featuring a bath caddy I couldn’t resist picking up this one, on sale for £3. Bargain!
SINNLIG scented candle, £2.50. Now I have no idea what this scent is, IKEA call it “calming spa” but I really like it. It’s the grey one, if that helps anyone work it out!
SINNERLIG bottles, £6 & £4.50. All the heart eyed emojis for the new SINNERLIG range, designed by Ilse Crawford. The plan is to use these bottles for spirits when I actually get around to creating myself a little bar cart area.

Not pictured:
KNAGGLIG boxes, £9. I bought another three of these. I use them everywhere and raved about them in my Ikea Must Have’s Under £10 post.

What have you been picking up in Ikea recently?
